Surgery Preparation Information

Things you need to know when coming in for a Procedure...

Patients MUST be accompanied to the Institute by a relative or friend. On arrival a short history and physical examination will be performed and the patient will be given a complete explanation of what to expect.

Patients who have had a balloon angioplasty are observed at TVI on bed rest for four hours. Arteriogram patients must stay for two hours and venogram patients for only one hour. To make the recovery period as comfortable as possible each patient rests in a private cubicle that is equipped with TV and a DVD player so they can watch a movie of their choice or their favourite soap opera. Relatives and friends are encouraged to join the patient during the recovery period.

Following discharge patients are instructed to limit their activity to bathroom privileges for the next 24 hours. They are encouraged to report any problems and for this purpose are given a pager number that allows them to contact the angiographer at any time. Patients who live alone must arrange to have company the night of the procedure.

Getting Home

If you live in Toronto, or less than 50 miles away, you may return home by car when you are released from TVI. You should arrange for a friend to do the driving or take a taxi - do not expect to drive yourself home. Do not use a streetcar, the subway or a bus.

If you are from out of town, make arrangements to stay at a hotel or at a friend's house in Toronto for the 24 hours following the procedure. No damage will result from driving or riding in a car and you will be fit to travel by bus, train or plane 24 hours after the procedure.
